GAPSN in 1990
By David Hong and Leo Hsu From InformAsian, GAPSN Monthly Newsletter, March 1990 Sad to say and after 5 1/2 years of GARP (Gay Asian Rap), GARP will finally come to an end. This was a difficult and tearful task for the membership to vote on. In 5 ½ years (October 1984 to February 1990), we have seen GARP play an important role in the Gay Asian Community. The support it provided to its members had been a fulfilling purpose and goal since its inception in October 1984. GARP will never be forgotten, it will always be remembered in our hearts and in our memories. In all, it is estimated that over 150 gay Asian men have had some involvement with GARP in those 5 ½ years. More recently, it has outgrown its name, its objectives and goals. We are involved in activities that go beyond the confines of a rap group. For the past two years, we have made a political statement by marching as a group in the Gay & Lesbian Pride Parade in West Hollywood. We have successfully organized fundraisers to benefit our own group and the Minority AIDS Project, A/PLG's AIDS Intervention Team, and the Asian Pacific AIDS Task Force. We will continue to use the logo to represent our group. We still believe that it symbolizes our uniqueness within the gay and Asian communities-"chip off the old block". Hence, our new name will be Gay Asian Pacific Support Network (GAPSN). GAPSN will consist of a steering committees, which includes two Co-Chairs, Rap Coordinator, Social Coordinator, PR/Outreach Coordinator, Membership Coordinator, and Publication Coordinator. A press release will be released to inform the gay media, gay Asian groups around the country, gay university groups and all others of our name change
